Bengaluru, Jun 25: Drugs worth over Rs 50 crore had been seized and will be destroyed on Saturday, home and law minister Basavaraj Bommai said in Bengaluru on Friday.
Speaking to media in Bengaluru, he said the seized drugs were being destroyed as per the court directions under the International Anti-Drugs and Contraband Day celebrations.
As many as 12 types of drugs, including ganja, opium, brown sugar, heroin, charas, cocaine worth Rs 50.23 crore have been seized and will be destroyed. A total of 4,066 cases have been registered last year and 5,291 persons have been arrested, he said.
For the first time in the country, Karnataka has registered cases under the Prevention of Illicit Trafficking of Narcotic Drugs and Psychiatric Substances Act, which is tough legislation under which the accused will not be granted bail easily. It is like the Anti-Goonda Act, he said.
The home minister said NDPS Act will be further tightened and discussions with the National Law School are being held to suggest changes and rules.
Answering questions, Bommai said the investigation in the anti-drug cases registered against some celebrities and Kannada film actors has been completed and charge sheets have been filed in courts. The cases will be taken to its logical end, he said complimenting the police for their good work last year.
