Kundapur, Sep 3: “The first priority of education should be to develop the personalities of the students. An education that imparts basic qualities of humanity and honesty can contribute youths embedded with noble qualities and impeccable character to the society in general,” noted state Lokayukta, Justice N Santosh Hegde.
He was speaking after inaugurating Dr B B Hegde First Grade College, newly opened by Kundapur Education Society here, on Thursday September 2.
He felt that the children of today can alone be able to bring changes in the present democratic set up. “They need model teachers cherishing noble ideals. The time of the legislature is being wasted in handing over everything for scrutiny to Central Bureau of Investigation or the Lokayukta. How far are out politicians justified in whiling away their time in this way, rather than attending to their duty of catering to the problems faced by the people?” he questioned.
Justice Hegde expressed deep concern at the pathetic condition of government schools and expressed regret at the fact that the government grants are not reaching the beneficiaries directly. “At least now you wake up to the situation and bring improvements in government schools. Corruption has become omnipresent. Politicians and officials are the most corrupt people. Unless the politicians mend their ways and wake up and discharge their duties before the people revolt, they will have a pay a heavy price,” he warned.
State home minister, Dr V S Acharya, presided. Mangalore University vice chancellor, T C Shivashankara Murthy, participated as the chief guest. On this occasion, Vishalakshi Hegde, who donated site for the college building apart from making monetary donation, was honoured.
Secretary of the education society, B M Sukumar Shetty, delivered introductory address. Secretary, K Seetaram Nakkattaya, welcomed. Principal of PU college, Chitra Karant, presented the programme. Principal of Dr B B Hegde degree college, Seema P Shetty, proposed vote of thanks.
