Mangalore, Sep 2: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC), V Ponnuraj, instructed the officials of the National Highways Authority of India and the executing company, Ircon, to complete the pending works connected with the widening of national highway stretch between Suratkal and Kottara in the city outskirts, latest by December this year. He conducted a spot inspection of this stretch of the road on Wednesday September 1, and asked the concerned to set right defects noticed by him.
During the inspection, he observed that water pipeline has not been shifted and a service road as per condition was not laid, near Kottara. He issued instructions for the immediate shifting of the water pipes, laying of the service road, and completion of the incomplete over bridge work at Kottara. He also directed that unauthorized structures that are impeding the progress of the work be demolished forthwith. About the hitch at the Bykampady railway bridge work, where traffic bottlenecks have been the order of the day, he said that the works will be jointly executed by New Mangalore Port Trust, railway department and Ircon.
He noted that issuance of land acquisition orders without marking the borders of the land proposed to be acquired, was not right. He asked the concerned to mark the borderline, and enter into harmonious understanding wherever there is a misunderstanding. Several people approached the DC during his inspection, with complaints that huge pits created on the roadside during the road expansion work have been proving hazardous, as they pose threat to the lives of the road users and have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes as water gets stranded in them.
Gavasani of NHAI said that fresh tenders have been called for the new road under bridge to be laid at Padil and for the over bridges at Bykampady and B C Road, for which a time limit of a year has been stipulated.
Police commissioner, Seemant Kumar Singh, city mayor, Rajani Dugganna, deputy mayor, Rajendra Kumar, corporators, Ganesh Hosabettu, Tilakraj Krishnapura and several officials accompanied the DC during the inspection.
