Mangaluru, Jun 22: In a tragic incident, a father reportedly tried to end his son's life by dousing him in petrol and setting him on fire. The father has since been arrested.
The accused is identified as Vishwanath Shetty alias Thippi (52) and the victim is Sharmith Shetty (25). The incident was reported at Tharduliya in Jeppu on Monday June 21 night.
The duo had engaged in a verbal battle on Monday earlier in the day. In grudge, the father tried to end his son’s life, who was sleeping in his room, by pouring petrol on him and setting him on fire.

Sharmith who was in a critical condition, was rushed to a private hospital in the city. Kankanandy police later arrested the father.
The victim has suffered 70% burns, but is stable. It is gathered, verbal duels were a daily affair between the father and son at home. The father used to consume alcohol and get into arguments quite often.
The father-son duo were involved in animal husbandry, it is learnt.
