Targeted in Sandalwood drugs case being a woman: Actress Ragini Dwivedi

Vijaypura, Jun 17 (IANS): Almost six months after she was freed on bail in the 'Sandalwood' drugs case, Kannada actress Ragini Dwivedi on Wednesday said that she strongly feels that she was targeted because she is a woman.

After taking part in a blood donation and vaccination camp for the transgender community here, Ragini broke her silence for the first time in public forum, stating that it was easy for people to brand her and target her during her worst phase of life when she was caught in the drug case, linked to the Kannada film industry.

"Women are, in general, an easy target in our society. Not only in my case, it happens with all women and it gets even more amplified when a woman happens to be a successful woman... it's even worse," she said.

She said why should she single out anyone like Prashant Sambargi, as everyone tried their best to target her by running their own hashtag campaigns on social media sites.

"In any case when I don't know them, why should I bother about what they write or speak about me?" she said.

The actress added that she was actually more than blessed as those who knew her did not desert her but stood firm with her.

"People still love me for my work. I have fans who constantly motivate me to do better work and forget bad phase of my life," she said in response to a question.

Following the Narcotics Control Bureau's seizure of drugs in August 2020, Kannada film director Indrajit Lankesh claimed to have information on several film personalities who frequently used drugs at parties. On August 31, the Central Crime Branch police questioned him for almost five hours and appealed to share whatever details they can to support the police in its fight against the drug menace. Lankesh claimed he had shared 15 names from the industry as well as some supporting documents.

Based on these inputs, on September 4, 2020, Ragini was picked up from her flat in Yelahanka after she had failed to appear before the CCB. After this another actress, Sanjjanaa Galrani, was also arrested on September 5, 2020, hence, this case came to be known as the Sandalwood drugs case.

After interrogating more than 180 witnesses, the CCB filed a mammoth 2,400 page charge sheet against 25 persons, including Ragini and Sanjjanaa, in March this year.

Recently, I had watched speech of Retired Justice Santosh Hegde, the pride of Tulunadu. He says, during his childhood, when the person goes to jail, the society used to socially boycott, and that person lives a life of shame. Today, people has no shame to go to jail. Some thing really wrong with our society.

The kick that contraband substances give cannot be fashioned to work based on gender. But, if you had also gained notoriety for visiting famous dens in Bangalore including one in Kammanahalli then you have yourself to blame. You could consider naming the other genders and have law enforcement agencies chase them to get over this belly aching. Why did anyone in underworld come in to your rescue?

So many Bollywood celebrities too are involved in drugs use but everything remains a secret until caught in the act or tipped off. Finally, they spoil their career.

Law is equal for Everyone even if person is Man or Woman. I totally disagree with your claim that you are targeted because you are a woman. Since, you are involved in drug crime, you deserved for punishment. Please don't use your WOMAN BENIFIT CARD in this case, it is useful only for Fake Rape or Molestation Case. So, Please accept your crime since you are involved, don't blame others.

We have intelligence and other departments to stop crime. They postmortem work. They should work before crime to take place. They should be published for their failure. If they work these activities will not take place. They must investigate dear more than consumer.

Earlier film industry used to be a place for talented actors but now even non talented people make it to the stage by using drugs which temporarily improve performance. Its a sad fact even at Bollywood....its parallel to Natural Bodybuilding and Bodybuilding with steroids

Acting and laughter becomes effortless without drugs. The film-industry around the world is built on the stuff. Stop watching all such shows, and save the workers in the industry from self-destruction.

With due respect Sir/madam, drugs is everywhere. Infact it is very less in the media industry. You go to all the colleges in and around Mangalore or Karnataka for that matter, you ll find enough drugs worth enough to feed the poor for a month atleast. The IT sector in Bangalore is more into drugs and all that more than the film industry. Stop blaming the entire community for a person's mistake.

Ever since the film industry has come about, the actors are looked up to by most people. Everyone aspires to become like their role-models in the film industry. But, if we take away the drugs in this industry, the whole industry will fall flat! So, while the Government will not ban the industry, it is best that people are educated about the drugs in this industry. Of course, sports role-models are drugs-driven as well. So, people must stop watching films unless/until the actors openly declare they consume no drugs.
