Mangaluru, Jun 12: There is an increased apprehension about the possibility of some circles located in some city junctions in the city functioning as carriers of certain diseases like dengue and malaria.
Even though the monsoon has begun, we are getting long durations of sunny weather in between. This atmosphere is ideal for the spread of malaria and dengue, and because of this reason, there is cause for worry. Because of this risk, there is a need to take abundant precautions.

In most of the circles, rainwater gets stranded in artistic carvings. They appear to have turned into the breeding grounds for mosquitoes. If it rains regularly, there is no tension, but intermittent rainfall with long gaps of sunshine can wreak havoc with the health of the citizens.
Under these circumstances, these circles have to be cleaned at least once a week. Different organizations maintain different circles. Some of the circles are maintained well whereas some others seem to have been in a neglected state.
At the Clock Tower circle in the city at Hampankatta, for example, arrangement for standing water around has been made to add to its looks but algae is visible there at the bottom. Unless this water is not emptied, it will become a mosquito breeding centre in future. Same is the problem with State Bank and Mallikatte circles. On the other hand, in case of large circles, Guppy fishes can be bred so that they eat up the larvae of the mosquitoes.
Malaria and dengue are the common monsoon season diseases which bother the city every year. Now because of the prominence given to coronavirus, people are not taking enough care about the risks posed by malaria and dengue. In the last some years, dengue has been playing havoc. Therefore there is a need to be careful.
Mayor Premananda Shetty said that he will instruct officials to check spots where water gets stranded. He noted that there is no problem if it rains regularly but the mosquitoes can breed in conditions where rain and sunshine appear alternatively. He advised people to see that water does not stagnate in terraces or flowerpots.
