Mangaluru, Jun 12: An old well was found underneath Navbharath circle after its demolition. The old well was covered by a concrete slab, which collapsed during the demolition work on Friday June 11. It is said that well is around 20 years old.
Mayor Premananda Shetty visited the site and examined the spot.
Decades ago, Navbharath, which was a leading newspaper in Mangaluru, had its printing press here, due to which the circle was named Navbharath Circle. The circle was not maintained properly and hence lost its beauty. The circle was used to display posters and banners.
The mayor had earlier clarified that the circle is being demolished under Smart City project as it was unscientifically constructed and traffic jams were common in the area. He also said that the circle will be rebuilt scientifically and there would be no change in its name.
A similar well was found at Hampankatta which is said to be a hundred years old. The well was called ‘Appanna’ well. The name ‘Appanna’ later went on to become Hampankatta.
