Udupi: Bhaskar Shetty murder case - Bones changed course of investigation

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jun 10: The murder of entrepreneur, Bhaskar Shetty, had turned into a sensational news as the accused were identified as his own wife, son, and a young astrologer. The chief district and sessions court here has concluded that the accused are guilty of the charges levelled against them, and awarded them sentence for life.

Bhaskar Shetty was murdered at his residence at Indrali at about 3 pm on July 28, 2016. The investigation revealed that the body was burnt down in a platform made for sacrificial fire at the residence of astrologer Niranjan Bhat in Nandalike village. The remains were reportedly thrown at several spots in rivers and rivulets. On July 31, Bhaskar Shetty's mother, Gulabi Shetty, who failed to get response to repeated calls made to her son, filed a missing complaint in Manipal police station. The police soon found out that Shetty had been murdered.

The investigation took a new turn after bones were recovered from a rivulet near Nandalike. The bones matched the DNA of the victim's mother. This helped the police to put together loose ends.

Rajeshwari Shetty, who was arrested, had succeeded in getting bail after sometime. Her son, Navneet Shetty, and astrologer, Niranjan Bhat, are lodged in a jail in Bengaluru. Niranjan Bhat's father, Srinivas Bhat, who was accused of destruction of evidence, died due to ill health when the case was pending.

The judgement solely depended on circumstantial evidence as there were no eyewitnesses. Special public prosecutor, Shantaram Shetty, said that the case was solved after the bones which were found from a rivulet at Nandalike as per the confession of the accused, matched with the DNA samples of the victim's mother and brother.

The fact that neither Rajeshwari nor Navneet had filed missing complaint with the police gave rise to suspicion about their role. Out of 167 listed witnesses, 78 were examined. 270 exhibits and 130 MOSes were filed in this case.

Reshma Salian, Don't give silly statement . No lawyers will tell anyone to kill and after killing come to us we will defend you. In India or in the world. When you have done a crime you go and hire him to defend . It's his profession. He has studied law and it's his way of earning his living. If you could buy justice in the whole world including India the prisoners would not have been over crowded. First of all you should understand any case you talk about. The famous case of Tarun Tejpal in Mapusa Goa the session court has acquitted the former editor in chief accused of the rape case, Which the press had made a big noise. . The women of our country were hurt. But the truth was different. It was in the month of May.

Mahesh ...you are absolutely right. These lawyers are trying to protect the criminals. That is the reason for increase in rapes and criminal cases in India. These lawyers have no heart. They just see the money and defend the murderers.

Mahesh do you think this is possible in our country..? Persons with criminal background have become law makers and ministers and our police force is protecting them. Lack of fear has created more criminals. Child rape is happening every now and then. People should be scared to participate in unlawful activities and the punishment should be too serious and in time bound manner. Will this ever happen.....?

You missed the point here sir . It's not me , you or lawyer decides who is guilty or not. Its the judge based on the evidence placed before him . So how anybody can decide who is guilty or not before the judgement ?

Sad that lawyer for murderers will appeal at higher courts against the verdict. These murderers should be encountered. Thats the only solution. So many crimes in Karnataka. Laws are very liberal to these so called criminals and hence crimes are increasing. Sad to see this.

Don't blame the lawyers, its due to the system... appeal is absolutely necessary otherwise many innocents in other cases can suffer. I am happy that justice has been done in this case.

Sanjay...lawyers find every loophole in the system and will try to protect the criminals. There are lot of clear cases in India where criminals are saved by the lawyers. Who saved Salman Khan? Not the lawyers??? In India, if you have money any criminal can walk free. The murderer who killed Jessica Lal is out of jail. This is the system we have and lawyers are making money. With regard to this case, it's not yet clear if the murderers get punishment. Immediate hanging all these criminals is the best option.

Our constitution has given right to appeal, even kasab was given that right. Whatever lawyers argue, its unlimately has to pass the many levels of learned judges. So the system is in place, few misuse it...
