Udupi, Jun 7: Karnataka Rajyotsava awardee and Nadoja awardee Dr Krishnaprasad, expert doctor Dr Aparana Nayak and a team from Prasad Netralaya, here, in an emergency operation on Sunday night removed a live worm from the right eye of a 70-year-old lady and provided her relief from pain.

The lady suffering from eye pain had visited Prasad Netralaya in the morning on June 1. Dr Krishnaprasad who quickly examined her found the worm going around her retina and prepared for emergency surgery. Dr Krishnaprasad, Dr Aparna Nayak and the team who were preparing for the surgery administered medicine to make the worm inactive. The worm became invisible apparently because of the effect of the medicine. The doctors assumed that the worm died. The elderly lady returned home and she said that she had no difficulty till three days later.

But she experienced pain in the eye again on Sunday evening. Her house people saw the worm crawling in the eye. The lady was rushed to Prasad Netralaya by her anxious family members. Dr Krishnaprasad’s team, who responded to the call, performed emergency surgery on her at the outpatient department without taking time to go to the operation theatre. The nine-centimeter-long worm came out from her eye.

The doctor recalled his experience of pulling out a worm from the eye of a patient about 15 years ago. However, he said that the worm is the first to have been removed from the outer layer of the eye. He said that the worm is sent to the laboratory for further research.

“I will be deciding about prescribing treatment to the patient after receiving the report from the laboratory,” said Dr Krishnaprasad.
