Mangaluru, May 29: For many people lockdown has provided ample leisure time. They do not have any work to do at home and cannot move around. Under this situation, they are showing interest in voluntary work that benefits the society at large.
Many organizations and institutions from the undivided Dakshina Kannada district have got involved with several selfless services to mitigate the hardships heaped by Covid19 on the weaker sections of the society. Through this, they not only spend time meaningfully, but also get a feeling of fulfilment. People join groups engaged in cleaning, desilting, road and drain constructions, house repairs etc and have been proving the enormous power of unity.
The members of the group decide about the work, plan of action, cost etc by discussing on WhatsApp and then decide about the day of voluntary work. They collect the equipment and implements needed, come together at the pre-decided spot and work hard without giving a damn to their castes or religious affiliations, and see that the planned work is completed.
Fifteen members of Satyoda Tuluver organization who belong to Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts came together and repaired the house of Krishna Poojary from Gurpur Kukkudakatte recently. Poojary's housel had been gutted in fire. Katipalla Seva Charitable Trust reconstructed the house of two old sisters from a poor family living near Koddabbu Daivasthana, Katipalla. Sri Ram Friends and BJP supported members of Mundoor gram panchayat together laid a road to the village which had no road connectivity for the last 50 years. The house of Sanjeeva Mogera from Peruvai Muchirabettu, which had suffered a crash, was repaired by members of Muslim Aikya Vedike, Peruvai. The old house of Nagamajji residing at Jarandagudde in Kallige village, Bantwal taluk, was cleared in preparation for the construction of a new house by members of Laxmi Vishnumurthy Seva Sangha Jarandagudde and Hndu Jagran Vedike. A house occupied by a lone woman at Talapady Janata Colony was renovated by Thokottu Sai Parivar Trust and Talapady Mitra Vrinda games team members. Many such workers are continuing to serve the community elsewhere too.
It is possible to achieve some developments in rural areas during the lockdown period by making proper use of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. Young people will also earn some income in this way. Recently, desilting work of drain at Koladabadi Badakere in Mulur village within Gurpur village was undertaken under the said scheme by local young men, women and elders.
