Moodbidri, Aug 21: Nonu Bhandary (75), who was a barber by profession, and a respected senior member of Savita Smaj, committed suicide on the night of Thursday by jumping into the well at his home in Mastikatte Nelligudde.
After finishing dinner on Thursday, he went out of his home on the pretext of visiting the toilet. Reportedly, he was bothered by a prolonged ailment and the mental derangement of his wife.
During his tenure at Madikeri of about two decades, Nonu had worked as barber to some of the leading personalities from the three defence wings. He set up his saloon here four decades ago, and till his death, continued to work, even by visiting homes of some persons for attending to their needs. He had been felicitated by various organizations, including Savita Samaj.
He is survived by wife, and five sons including municipal councillor, Prasad Bhandary, and Savita Samaj local unit president, K S Prakash Bhandary. All the saloons in the region downed their shutters on Friday as a mark of respect for the departed soul.
