Mangalore, Aug 13: In a first-of-its-kind surgery in the district, performed in the city by Dr Roshan Shetty, head of the department of surgery, City Hosptial here, a woman who faced threat to her life after accidentally swallowing her denture, was saved.
The 52-year-old Moodbidri-based woman had accidentally swallowed her denture, which had become loose over the years, while having lunch recently. As the denture slipped into the food pipe and made a deep gash to the inner walls, she suffered from chest pain, difficulty in breathing, and inability to consume food. After her condition turned critical, she was referred to the said hospital. After confirming through X-ray and radiology tests that the denture had got stuck in her oesophagus, Dr Shetty formed a team of specialist doctors to perform the complicated surgery, as any delay would have caused the food pipe to rupture and lead to further complications.
The team conducted a two-hour log key-hole surgery on the woman, at the end of which, it succeeded in extricating the denture. Shetty said that the woman is recovering fast after the surgery, and that she would be discharged shortly.
