Mangaluru, May 1: Though May 1 is International Labour Day, a day dedicated to workers and labours across the world, a public holiday in many countries, the civic workers in the city are working without leave amid spiking cases of Covid-19 in the city.
On Saturday, many civic workers were found collecting the garbage and cleaning the roads on Market Road, PVS, and State Bank. A few workers were also involved in the construction works in the city.
Several workers from North Karnataka are working as civic workers and labourers at construction sites for their livelihood in the city.
May Day celebrates labourers and encourages them to be aware of their rights. Every year International Workers' Day is observed on May 1 and it has its origins in the labour union movement. May Day is observed in the countries like India, Cuba, China and many other countries.
As the pandemic hit the country, people are not allowed to hold any events regarding International Labour Day.
