Mangalore, Jul 19: (TNN) The Federation of Karnataka Autorickshaw Drivers' Union, Dakshina Kannada district committee has urged the regional transport authority to hike autorickshaw fares. A delegation of the federation's district committee called on the additional district magistrate and the regional transport officer here on Saturday and submitted separate memorandums seeking enhanced autorickshaw fares.
L T Suvarna, district general secretary said autorickshaw drivers faced hardships due to increased prices of all essential commodities. The increase in prices of fuel used in autorickshaws including petrol and LPG, as well as spare parts, tyres, and general maintenance is taking its toll on autorickshaw drivers. In addition, the cost of insurance, and other license and registration fee too has gone up, he noted.
Keeping in mind all these issues, the regional transport authority should fix the minimum fare for the first 1.5-kms at Rs 16, and Rs 11 for every kilometre thereafter. Similarly, the federation has sought a 15 per cent increase in waiting and luggage charges respectively from the existing rates, Suvarna said, adding that the delegation also urged the RTA to expeditiously take a decision on their demands and announce the same.
