Mangalore, Jul 16: Shashikala Shetty (56), a resident of Shimantoor village, Mulky, who was distressed over the fact that her younger son, Navin Shetty (27) had gone missing and remained untraceable for a month, committed suicide on Monday July 12. Her death was followed by Navin's suicide soon after, and the incident came to light when his body was found lying on the banks of River Netravati at Ullal on Thursday July 15.
Reportedly, Navin had left home on May 23 without notice. It was believed that he had distanced himself from the family because of his love affair with a girl from Bykampady, which was disapproved by the girl’s family. He continued to send messages to his elder brother occasionally, but never let the family know where he lived or what he did.
On July 10, he had switched off his mobile, after sending a message to his brother that he was suffering from brain tumour, and that he would not live long. His mother committed suicide at her home by hanging herself two days thereafter. People thought her son would attend the funeral, but he did not. At 10 pm on July 13, Navin had sent a SMS to his elder brother. It is presumed that he jumped into the river to end his life.
