Mangalore, Jul 15: Catholic Sabha Manglur Pradesh has urged the state government to implement all the recommendations made by Justice Somashekhara Commission of Inquiry that had probed church attacks in the state. In accordance with the recommendations, it has demanded for the withdrawal of the cases registered against Christians relating to the incidents of attacks on churches.
A delegation led by Sushil Noronha, convener of the political awareness unit of Catholic Sabha Kulshekhar unit, met in-charge deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, S A Prabhakar Sharma, and handed over to him a memorandum containing the above demand, addressed to the state Chief Minister, home minister, and district in-charge minister. President of the unit, Marriott Pinto, secretary, Pauline D’Souza, Henry D’Souza, Alban Pinto, Celestine Crasta, Leo Mascarenhas and church parish council vice president, Victor Vas, were the members of the delegation.
The memorandum points out that a number of of innocent Christians have been booked under various cases, relating to the incidents of attacks on churches, which occurred on September 14 and 15, 2008. “Although requests were made to the government repeatedly to withdraw these cases in the past, nothing has been done even after the lapse of several months, although the commission of inquiry into the incidents had also recommended for the same,” the memorandum points out.
