Udupi, Mar 14: Udaya Acharya (45), a resident of Beedu Nadsalu in Padubidri, has been bedridden for the past two years. His family is desperately in need of financial support.

Udaya had been working as a blacksmith to feed his family. In 2007, fate struck a heavy blow when he was diagnosed with papillary carcinoma of thyroid with bilateral lung and skeletal metastases. He underwent three surgeries between 2007 and 2016, but continues to suffer to this day.

Udaya was hospitalized as an out-patient as well as an in-patient in KMC Manipal and his family had to spend around Rs 8 lac for his treatment. Though the family could not afford it, they managed to gather the amount after borrowing loans and taking financial help from relatives and friends.

Udaya was the only breadwinner of the family until a couple of years ago. His wife, aged mother and two school-going children are completely dependent on him. Now, his wife is striving hard to run the family by rolling beedi.

His friends, relatives and well-wishers have already extended a helping hand. But currently, his family is under the burden of a huge loan. Additionally, he requires around Rs 10 lac for further treatment. His family is trying to raise funds to save him.

Though he was admitted to a private hospital for treatment, as the family is poor and could not afford the hospital charges, he had to be discharged. At present, he is availing treatment from traditional medical practitioners ('Naati Vaidya'). The family is in dire need of financial support, and hence has requested generous financial support to help overcome this tough phase.
