Udupi, Mar 12: A owner of a reputed electronic shop and his staff reportedly attacked a civic worker near Udupi City Bus Stand on Friday, March 12.

It is said that the scuffle broke out for a silly reason over the segregation of waste.

The victim has been identified as the driver of the waste transportation vehicle Sanju Madar. It is also said that the accused threatened the victim. The video of the incident has gone viral on social media. City Municipal Council health officer Karunakar had rushed to the spot when he came to know of the issue. As per reports, in the presence of the officer, the accused came forward to attack the victim.

The victim Sanju had allegedly questioned the electronic shop owner for not segregating dry and wet waste, following which he was attacked. The accused also attacked another person who was sitting in the vehicle.

The issue was also raised by Twitteratis following which former minister Pramod Madhwaraj assured of bringing the civic worker to justice. "I spoke to SP Udupi to take immediate action against the culprits as there are rumours that the case is being hushed up. Proper protection should be given to pourakarmikas who do everything possible to keep our cities clean," he responded to a user on Twitter.

The Udupi police have arrested two accused identified as Ismail (55) from Nejar and Suhail (28) from Hoode.

After hearing the audio and seeing the reaction on video, surely this driver has done something wrong before and now taking advantage of it. The accused were really silly to let it happen in public or in front of video.

These Bijapuris have migrated to Udupi so much in. the last 2 decades that. at time when on the road they seem majority and we the locals minority. They have started behaving very rude specially these garbage collectors. We the people of udupi treat ppl with respect and expect the same in return. Don't take the locals for granted. This is the same situation in GOa as well.

Whatever may be the reason, the way the goons attacked the helpless guy is unpardonable (as shown in the footage). If the guy has misbehaved they could have informed the appropriate authority or verbally scolded him. They should STOP collecting waste from this shop forever. That's it. Let these Pourkarmikas be from anywhere, they are doing this for their livelihood. Believe me, no one wants to collect, sort others waste if they have some better option to earn money.

Before showing symapthy on this victim, just think what wet waste can a electronic shop generate.. The issue was this civic worker is to always behave rudely with this family in their house. He was also caught stealing coconuts from their land and was thrashed then.. so this incident was planned by this man to teach them a lesson.. But these people are wrong to hit him.

If they can't treat a civic worker with dignity, don't collect the waste generated from that shop. Better still, dump all the gathered waste into that shop daily.
