Moodbidri, Jul 6: The Bharat Bandh call given by opposition parties protesting against the recent price hike of petroleum products by the union government was rather peaceful across the taluk on Monday July 5.
Agricultural activities picked up speed with more elderly local farmhands being transported in jeeps to many paddy fields across the taluk on Monday July 5 to plant rice saplings.
The acute shortage of young farmhands is affecting agricultural activities and this has forced the owners of large farms to lure the farmhands, both men and women over the age of 50 years, to work in their paddy fields.
The moderate rains this year were a blessing to these farmers to complete the planting of rice saplings. A few young farmhands were also seen preparing food and snacks and delivering to elderly labourers at their work place.
