Mangaluru: Fisherwomen’s woes - Water everywhere, but not at seashore

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 25: The women who work on the fishing quay, cutting the fish at the old port here are struggling to get water. Even though the sea next to them has enough water, they are facing a shortage.

Men and women undertaking fish cutting job sit under the shed here. The shed is in a dilapidated condition, supported by broken pillars and sheets which can crumble anytime.

Fisherwomen Girija and Baby, say that they have been cutting fish for a long, but they are afraid that the shed can crumble as the pillars are broken and rusted. They have been cutting the fish for many years. They admit they do not get space at the State Bank market. Even though about 50 women and 25 men do the fish cutting job, they lack the facility of water to clean the fish.

They face an acute shortage of water and have to bring water from the sea in buckets. They say that the water where effluents from factories pour into the sea sometimes has worms in it.

When fisheries minister S Angara visited the port two days ago, the women met him and requested for shed reconstruction and water facility. Angara, who noted their problems promised them to do the needful.

I totally agree with this report. I recently happen to visit this place to my utter dismay , this place so dilapidated. & highly unhygienic, with open gutters & no basic facilities.

I saw one video clip a few days ago, fisherwomen blatantly cheering modi and saying if petrol and deisel prices goes beyond their reach and they lose their income even then they will support modi and Modi is their icon. So better let them decide and Modi will solve their problem
