Bantwal, Feb 25: A large number of birds perish for want of food, water and shelter. Many birds also migrate in search of better habitats. There have been several plans to save the birds, but rarely get properly implemented.

A young man from Bantwal taluk has proved himself to be a saviour of the feathered friends. He provides them with a place to stay and look them after in natural ways. This bird lover is Nityananda Shetty, a resident of Baidyarui near Mavinkatte, Bantwal taluk.

Employed in a private educational institution, Shetty holds the birds very dear to his heart. During the summer, the birds need water to drink. Shetty's father had told him that water should be provided to thirsty birds during the summer and he has been following this advice to letter and spirit. He has been setting aside food and water all over his house and plantation where iron roads have been arranged. He also has been keeping water and food over his roofs, vacant spots, atop the boulders etc. So far, he has spent over seven lac rupees. He says he gets a sense of fulfilment.

So far, Shetty has spent over seven lac rupees for the birds. Because of the increase in the temperature, and shortage of food, water and trees, birds are getting decimated. But Nityananda has grown fruits in his plantation for the birds to eat. His plantation has trees like papaya, guava, pineapple, mango, cashew and other fruits. He wishes that the birds eat and drink well, besides staying at his residence. He has placed artificial and natural trees all over his plantation and created an environment that is convenient for their improvement.

He has provided for nests to schools wherever he goes to provide information, to see that children get interest in the preservation of birds. Many organisation have honoured him in recognition of his concern for birds.
