Udupi: Influx of tourists to Kemmannu hanging bridge worries locals

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (HB/EP)

Udupi, Feb 10: Large numbers of tourists have been flocking to the Kemmannu hanging bridge especially during weekends. Kayaking also has started here recently. Therefore, the bridge which was confined only to locals is witnessing an influx of people from far and near.

Tourists come to see the stunning beauty of the flowing Swarna river. Earlier the number of visitors to the place was fairly less given the lack of parking facilities. However, with the recently introduced Kayaking sport, the number of visitors to the spot has increased.

Back in 1991, the bridge was built to attract people from Thimmanna Kudru and Padukudru. It was renovated at a cost of Rs 10 lac in the year 2015.

While two-wheelers are allowed to use the bridge, heavy vehicles are not permitted. Meanwhile, Kayaking activities are being operated keeping in mind the safety of tourists. However, there is no security provided around the area which has left the locals worried. They have also requested the concerned officials to pay attention to this issue.

On the other hand, a Nirmithi Kendra official said that the bridge can withstand the weight and that there was no need to be worried.

Toll to the visitors is justified as temporary measure. The permanent solution is build a parallel, stronger wider and safer second hanging bridge ( more popular word is suspension bridge). Tourism will further improve and bring additional business to local entrepreneurs...

This area, like a mangrove, was attracting a large number of rare migratory birds from around the world, which is very rare to find; once the influx of unruly tourists the virginity & tranquility of this place will be lost & create massive disturbance to the flora and fauna!

Quite obvious for the locals to worry!! But who is responsible for the inflow of tourists other than the social media? Isn't it the locals who have started small and huge investment businesses in and around? Are they not profiting from it? Heavy footfall on the hanging bridge is from the shared contribution of kayaking sport activity, small tea shops, toddy shops, eataries, boating, home stays, house boats, party cruise, and what not!!! There was a time when people moved out saying it is an isolated place and now that there is some bustling activity instead of cribbing enjoy the show and go with the flow. Let hanging bridge attract more fame, let the concerned authorities preserve it and continue to attract people from far and near. Meanwhile locals don't worry as the new concrete bridge is nearing completion. Change is the only constant and let's embrace it!!!

Local Panchayat should make use of this tourist attraction and provide security to this area weekend and public holidays. Also locals can earn some income by opening small shops and food hotels. Kemmanu is small city, 1 km away from bridge. Tonse hoode beeach is very nice and beautiful. If you go little further there is kodi beech. There are house. Boats also. Local administration should ensure that the area is clean and neat.

Instead of grumbling, locals should pool in money and start a cooperative restaurant there and earn profits. Cash on the situation.

@Satish Absolutely true. These so called Tourists are dangerous to the peaceful residents, ecology, flora and fauna of the area, and should be controlled and disciplined, including the number of people that can walk, stand on the bridge at given time, to save the bridge for the well being of local residents. Jai Hind!!!
