Bengaluru, Feb 10: A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the state high court, questioning the state government's move to carve out Vijayanagara district by bifurcating Ballari.
A person from Ballari, Eriswamy, has filed this PIL. It has not yet come up for hearing.
The PIL refers to the announcement of the state government about the creation of Vijayanagara as the 31st district of Karnataka. On February 8, a notification relating to this had appeared in the state gazette. The gazette notification had spelt out the borders of the districts and also that Hosapete would be the headquarters of Vijayanagara district.
The new district was created by putting together Hosapete, Kudligi, Hagaribommanahalli, Kottur, Hoovinahadagali and Harapanahalli taluks. These taluks were part of the Ballari district till now. With this segregation, Ballari is left with only five taluks, Ballari, Kurugodu, Siraguppa, Kampli and Sandur taluks.
Hosapete MLA Anand Singh, who is a minister, was adamant on the creation of a new district. The proposal was opposed by social welfare minister B Sriramiulu, MLAs, Somashekhara Reddy, Nagendra, J N Ganesh and others. Many had stoutly opposed the slicing of Ballari district. When resigning his seat with a plan to get elected from the BJP, Anand Singh had made it clear that Vijayanagara district should be created.
The draft notification about the district had been issued on December 14, and objections and suggestions had been invited. After considering the objections and suggestions received so far, the government issued gazette notification, officially giving birth to the new district.
