Around 40 personnel from the wild animal department of Hebri, Karkala, Amasebailu and Siddapura were involved in the operation. Three people were fined on the occasion for throwing food packets on the ghat. They also educated the public at the beginning and end of the ghat. Awareness boards were also placed in this regard.

Bhagavasdas Kudthalkar, assistant forest conservator of Siddapur, Anil Kumar, zonal forest officer of Hebri zone, Sandesh Kumar, zonal forest officer of Amasebailu and personnel of all the four zones participated in the operation.

Rs 100 fine is fixed for throwing garbage and plastic roadside on the ghat. Giving details of the operation, Anil Kumar, zonal forest officer, Hebri said, "This operation is being carried out on Saturdays and Sundays, the days on which tourists in large numbers travel through Agumbe Ghat. By offering junk food, consumed by human beings, to wild animals, their food habits will have bad effects. In addition, there is a chance that the wild animals get used to it and attack human beings when they do not get junk food. It also spreads contagious diseases."

Has the Forest Department, Traffic Department, Tourism Dept. provided any place for tourists to enjoy their trip? Have they built enough toilets and bathing facilities for tourists and travelers? How many garbage bins are placed on the length of the roads, and also in the forested area? Are there drinking facilities for humans and wild animals provided by the above departments I mentioned? Jai Hind!!!!

Put up signes at entrance to either side of the ghat that there will be a big fine for littering. also, have cameras mounted to register the number plates. The western ghats are invaluable asset.

Problem is with forest department itself .. Provide dumpsters where place cards are kept . Just erecting signs is not a solution.

The garbage you generate is your responsibility. Take your garbage to your home or destination and dispose it with other home waste with proper segregation. That is why keeping garbage cans are not kept where the place cards are there. Otherwise, us, civilized Indians will convert it into another dumpyard.

Because of the uncivilized behaviour of some "educated" people, the officials have to stand on the road for hours doing inane tasks like this. If our people had some basic civic sense, all this could be avoided.

My big salute to the forest department for taking against people who are discarding food parcel boxes on Agumbe Ghat. I have seen this on this Ghat during my short visit with my wife to Shimoga. Many monkeys are surviving as they come close to get some food. Thanks Daijiworld for the picture shots of this and you have recalled my memories of the place.

The fine is really meagre, only when the fine is high people will learn some rules. The placard are small, if they are pictorial there is a better effect.

a Very Good and much needed Initiative by the Forest Dept. At the same time it is a shame that we the public have to be still taught to keep our surroundings clean. Its saddening when you see educated youngsters littering our roads, without a care, from their SPOTLESSLY CLEAN CARS. How hard is it to keep a plastic bag/dustbin in your car and discard it later at home. The present generation need to make sure that such habits are inculcated into our children from a young age, so that hopefully our future generations will be better.
