Mangaluru: Workforce to identify public parking space for vehicles

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 3: With the increase in number of vehicles and shortage of parking spaces in the city, the people have become a harassed lot. The city corporation has a proposal to form a separate team of officials to identify vacant spaces that can be converted into vehicle parking areas.

There is public demand for creation of parking spots at Kankanady, Ambedkar Circle, Bunts Hostel, State Bank, PVS Circle, Kudroli, Bunder, Lalbagh, Car Street etc where the people having vehicles come across a lot of problems. The people demand parking space to park vehicles for short periods till they complete work and return.

In many cases, people who park their vehicles for a few minutes to attend to urgent work find that their vehicles are towed away. By the time they go to the police station and complete formalities before remitting fine and getting back vehicles, several hours are wasted. The fines are also high.

There is a plan to build a three-storied parking complex near Balam Bhat Hall to address parking problem at Car Street. This building will have space for 60 vehicles, said MLA Vedavyasa Kamath.

A major cause for the parking problem is usage of parking areas for commercial purpose by building owners. The corporation has identified 50 such buildings and served notices. 1As many as 15 of these buildings have since cleared the encroached space and allowed parking. Corporation commissioner Akshy Sridhar, says that the corporation will act strictly against violators.

A meeting of police and corporation officials will be held soon. The meeting is expected to approve exhaustive change in traffic system, hums, CCTV cameras, sign boards etc towards bringing improvement in the situation.

The MCC should try to put pressure on the NHAI to speed up the Mangaluru City bypass between Mulki and Thokkottu via Kinnigoli, Kateel, Bajpe, Kaikamba, B.C. Road, Melkar and Mudipu. this was promised by Mr.Gaddkari in 2015 during his mangalore visit and subsequently a tender was floated for the feasibility study etc. This bypass road will drastically cut the congestion of mangalore city roads because today all vehicles enter mangalore city at kottara junction even if they have to go to other places. This leads to a cascading effect of blockages in vehicle flow patterns during daytime office hours.

MCC should clarify if shop owners can stop the general public other than their customers from parking in front of their shops. They employ a security guard or secure the area with a chain or put interlocks in the area and consider the area as their own private property. Kindly clarify for the benefit of the general public.

It is mandatory norms that MCC must provide public vehicles parking places in the city. The commercial complexes not provided parking site as owners of the buildings sold parking premises converting shops. Let MCC clear the parking area in all commercial buildings. The MLAs or MP or Councillors should consider the public demand and suggestion. Rule of Law to be followed by the authority.

Restoring parking spaces that building owners have converted into shops (and penalising them as well as the concerned persons in the MCC who have facilitated them in doing so) will solve 75% of parking woes of the city. But will MCC bell the cat?

Some heads are thinking at last. Happy. At the entry points to the city or market place let there be a dash board to display the vacant spaces to park. (Anyway Smart City right ?) In addition an app or something to book the slot. If no space to park, let them return or wait at some location. Waiting near the parking lot or disturbing at roads should not be allowed. Highlight the parking space and remove all No-Parking boards.
