Mangaluru, Jan 30: Padushedde Kudru, which is just a few km away from the city falls under the limits of Moodushedde gram panchayat, is a beautiful village. On one side of the village Phalguni river flows, while the other side has backwater of a vented dam that is built across the river. This village is known for crops like coconut, areca nut, banana, paddy, sugarcane and vegetables.
The only issue is that the villagers have to travel several kilometres if they have to come to the city as there is no direct road. Though Marakada is quite near to the village, they cannot access the same because of no road. They have to walk through the vented dam area.
During Monsoon season water flows above the vented dam. Villagers have to face difficulties due to floods. However, long-standing demand of locals is getting fulfilled now. Approval is given for constructing a road that connects the village to Marakada. When the road gets completed, it will be a convenient road for people of Vamanjoor, Kudupu and Neermarga to go to the airport, Kateel and Kinnigoli.
From Panja of Marakada till Padushedde Kudru, a road of around 1.5 km is about to be constructed. Out of this 700 meter will be concrete and the rest will be bitumen. This includes a huge bridge and three small drains. The concrete part of the road has already begun. Work on the bridge is also completed. Construction of drains is also in progress. The width of the road would be three meter. This is built under Pradhan Mantri Grameen Road Project.
The estimated cost of the project is Rs 2.68 crore. Out of this Rs 2.19 crore is for the construction of road. Rs 12.45 lac is earmarked for the maintenance of the road for the next five years. Rs 35.45 lac is other expenses. Though the work of this project was to be started in March 2020, the same was withheld due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to official sources, the project will be completed soon.
Padushedde Kudru is an area that is prone to floods. It is common for this area to get inundated during monsoon. Many houses of this village get submerged. After the dam is built across the river Phalguni, the floods have increased. There are nearly 30 to 40 houses with a population of 200. Those who have vehicles have to travel three km to go to Bondel and then proceed to the city. The locals say that after the construction of the road, it would be easier for them to reach the city in case of emergency.
MLA Umanath Kotian says, "Much-awaited demand of people of Padushedde Kudru is getting completed. The work of the road will be completed within four to five months. This road will be convenient not only for locals, but for people of Vamanjoor and Neermarga to reach the airport. This road will join Bondel-Moodushedde road, which was built last year."
