Udupi, Jan 30: Members of Malpe, Kalmady and Vadambhadeswara wards of city municipal council (CMC) took the concerned government officials to task over the inordinate delay in the execution of Under Ground Drainage (UGD) work that falls under the limits of city municipality and Nittur Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) works in the meeting that was held on Saturday January 30 at the Sathyamoorthy auditorium of city municipality.
"For the past many years, residents from Kalsanka to Kalmady are facing sewage water issues. In order to resolve this, an already tender for Rs 30 lac is called for a month ago, to purify sewage water and install pipeline for the same. Public of Adkadakatte and Nittur are facing inconvenience as the roads are dug in that area since a month. Black list the contractor immediately or let the city municipality itself take action on them," said ward members Santhosh Kumar, Sundar Kalmady, Vijaya Kodavoor and Savitha Harishram taking city municipality engineer Mohan Raju to task.
The ward members also said that due to this kind of contractor the image of city municipality and people representatives is marred. They urged the concerned work to start immediately.
MLA Raghupati Bhat instructed the engineer to complete the work in the next 15 days. He also said to give the contract to contractor who has experience in doing UGD work. If the Rs 30 lac work is not done, then it will create problems for the Rs one crore UGD works, which are going to be done in future. He also instructed the engineer to warn the respective contractor immediately.
Vadambhandeshwara Ward counciloor Yogish Salian said, "The number of tourists arriving at Malpe Beach and Sea Walk is increasing day by day. Double parking fee is being collected from the tourists. In addition, fee is being collected at two points. They are conducting atrocities on locals also. They do not even give a damn to people representatives."
"Migrant workers have built unauthorised sheds in Beedinagudde without any permission. However, private parties are collecting tax from them," accused councillor of Olakadu ward.
“Citizens of Udupi are facing a lot of technical problems in obtaining birth and death certificates from the municipality. There should be a fixed period of time to get those certificates,” said Vijay Kodavoor.
The commissioner in response said, “When the required documents are unavailable, certificate would be delayed. Amendment (correction) can be made only once.”
The ward members of Doddanagudde, Manipal, Ishwarnagar and Bailuru complained about irregularity in water supply. A member from Ishwarnagar complained saying, “As many as 27 houses are not getting proper water since a month though there is no shortage of water. Sometime, the operator forgets to switch off the pump. Because of these irregularities, people have started accusing us of being irresponsible.” He demanded to solve the issue at the earliest.
CMC president Sumithra Naik responding to the problem, called to conduct a water board meeting without any delay.
Girish Anchan questioned about constructing marina at Padukere beach. Opposing the project, Yogish V Salian, who is a ward member of Vadambadeshwar said, “Some of the so called fishermen are making statements. Due to the effort of former MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, we got a harbour here. I started opposing the marina, when I came to know that this project will affect fishing activities. Let us consider the opinion of real fishermen and associations.”
MLA Raghupati Bhat said, “As I am concerned about fishermen, I struggled hard to find the missing Suvarna Tribhuja boat spending money from my own pocket. I do not want to support any project which shows negative impact. Now this marina is just a proposal. It will take 10 months to study its advantages and disadvantages. When the report will come, I will conduct an experts’ meeting with fishermen. No pub or club will open here. It is my responsibility of look after that matter.”
The CMC is planning to conduct anti-plastic drive in order to make the city plastic-free under Swachh Bharat Mission in association with service organizations. The CMC president urged for support from everyone.
CMC vice president Lakshmi Salian was present.
