Mangaluru, Jan 30: Because of coronavirus concerns, family members are not being allowed to meet the prisoners directly. With the introduction of the ‘e-mulakat’ facility, the family members can now have one to one conversation with their incarcerated loved ones.
This is a system which works like the video call. The families staying in areas having network problem, lack of knowledge about the registration process or absence of mobile phones with video call facilities etc, some families have not been able to make use of this facility so far.
Because of coronavirus infection, in most of the cases, prisoners are produced in court now through video conferencing facilities. In rare cases, when there are specific court orders, the jail inmates are taken to courts personally, authorities stated.
For this facility, families have to register in eprisons.nic.in website duly filing Aadhar card and other documents. Prison authorities inform them about date and time (other than holidays) of contact on which the families receive video conference calls from, the prison and the families will get to talk for ten minutes in a week with the jailed family members. Prison superintendent here, Chandan G Patel, said that several relatives of prisoners have utilised this facility. Families can still register themselves and utilise the facility, he stated.
