Mangaluru, Jan 29: The urban planning and reforms standing committee here has decided that it would be proper to name the circle at Lady Hill after Brahmashri Narayanaguru and accordingly has recommended to the council on these lines.
There is likelihood of the agenda being taken up in the next general session of the corporation.
Often the issue of naming airport, railway station, roads and circles, are giving rise to disputes and political one-upmanship. The Congress has demanded to name the central railway station as Narayanaguru but has opposed the move to rename the above circle.
Friends Ballalbagh, Biruver Kudla, had sought to rename Lady Hill Circle as Brahmashree Narayanaguru Circle. The demand was supported by the fact that the road leading from the circle reaches Lord Gokarnanatha temple, deity of which was consecrated by Sri Narayanaguru. But Lady Hill institutions had opposed the idea. They said that the area acquired Ladyhill name to commemorate the visit of the then mother general Marie Ange, in 1885.
The committee noted that when the Congress was ruling in 2003, the city corporation mayor had given preliminary sanction to rename this circle after Narayanaguru in 2003 but the council meeting had decided to postpone it. It said that as per records, this circle had not been given any name so far.
