Beltangady, Jan 27: Recovery and extrication efforts put in to recover the body of second year degree course student of Ujire SDM College, Sanath Shetty (18), have failed to make any headway. Sanath had got under a huge mass of mud and other debris due to landslide at Badamane Abbi Falls on Monday.
The efforts made by fire brigade units, state disaster management unit, police, disaster management team of Dharmasthala and over 150 locals to move the mud deposit away from the spot the whole day failed to achieve success. At 6 pm, the operation was suspended. Because of tough terrain, JCBs cannot reach the spot. The mud deposit has covered the entire waterfall.
This happened to be the first ever incident of landslide at the said fall. The locals say that leakage in the pipeline supplying drinking water to a few houses would have caused the landslide.
MLA Harish Poonja, police circle inspector Sandesh PG, acting tahsildar Ramesh Babu and others visited the spot. Sanath's brother Shamith, has filed a complaint in Beltangady police station.
