Beltangady, Jan 24: Beltangady police on Sunday January 24 arrested six persons for allegedly barging into a hotel owned by a local BJP leader and assaulting the staff.
The arrested have been identified as Ajit Kumar, Arun Kumar, Nitish, Ashith Kumar, Parameshwar and Naveen.
The Empire hotel where the assault took place is owned by a leader of Ujire BJP minority cell.
On the night of Saturday January 23, the accused allegedly lay in wait for a person named Mohammed Altaf, a staff at the hotel, who was returning after delivering a parcel from the hotel. As soon as they saw him returning, they pounced on him, but he managed to escape and run towards the hotel. They chased him, barged into the hotel and assaulted him, it is alleged.
Sub-inspector Nandakumar and personnel rushed to the spot immediately and took necessary precautionary measures. Some locals tried to prevent the hooligans from damaging the hotel, it is said.
Sources said that the gang had visited the hotel a week ago as well and quarrelled with the staff. It is said that Saturday's incident was a result of this quarrel.
Beltangady police have registered a case against 15 persons, out of whom six have been arrested. The rest will be arrested soon based on CCTV footage, police sources said.
