Karkala: Senseless felling of trees for development sake irks villagers

Daijiworld Media Network - Karkala (SP)

Karkala, Jan 22: The road widening programme between Belman town in the taluk to Jantra is in progress now. This rural road was winding through a forest region. It is true that the road widening develops villages. At the same time, trees which were standing tall for hundreds of years are being axed.

The road widening programme envisages uprooting of a number of trees. The road leads to Shirva from Belman and already 42 trees standing on half a kilometre stretch have been uprooted.

This road was curvy and several accidents causing deaths and pains have happened here over the last some years. In one of these accidents a bike rider had died on the spot after falling under the wheels of a bus. In another accident, a lady was killed on the spot after a bus and a tipper collided with each other.

Belman deputy range forest officer Prakashchandra, says that as permitted by the forest department, 42 trees were cut down, and these trees were sent to the depot. He said that once the road widening work is completed, saplings will be planted afresh. A villager, Sathish, said that while development is good for the people, it is also true that the fact that trees are sacrificed for it dampens one's spirits.

I think most of the people comment here are not staying same area or nearby. I too against cutting of trees and like greenery but I know the issue we facing due to dangerous steep turn road. So many accident and so many lives lost due to curvy and dangerous road. 2011 State government survey and proposed Mangalore Airport Athradi Road and most of the area road widened except Belman to Pilarkana and some other area. We locals support this road widening work just to save lives of innocent people. I don't think so any locals staying nearby will oppose this widening work. Please note there is no option for locals any alternative road nearby areas and it’s a only main link road from belman –pernal-shirva

    Joseph,

You nailed it. Today writing mindlessly about trees without knowing the background has become a habit. Sustainable development is important. Sometimes its unavoidable to cut trees. Trees can be planted and in a few years they will grow. But what about lives lost. Care of the environment is important but people opposing blindly is not desriable.

I wish same widening road takes place from Shirva to Mudarangadi to Nandikoor! I guess no one can convince powerful lawyer to give up small stretch of land! Its almost one way road at many areas!

at last. the worm seems to turn - let more people protest against sensless and vitiated 'development' activities - only then will this country become worth living in.

When a development work is going on please do not stop that. it is in the public interest they are doing.

If you are heart fully bothered about the fallen trees plant, water and take care of 420 new trees in govt. land no body will stop you. think positive and live better my dear tree lovers. I am a true lover of greenery but not at the cost of stopping development in our town/city.

This cutting trees simply cut what before your eyes is old age case.Noone sees where and which tree should be cut.Did really someone surveyed before?First cut trees and then plant saplings ?how many years are taking to a sapling to become a tree?Probably then will come another one think of widening and cut that too.Best was first do survey to widen road to avoid unnecessary trees to cut .We have not learnt about fresh air is necessary for good health yet.

Here, the feeling of trees is not for 'development' but for 'construction'. When will we learn that nature cant be replaced by artificial things!

Planting trees itself is not the solution. It takes many years for a plant to become a tree. To cut a tree which has stood for 100s of years it barely takes an hour. What about the after effect of cutting trees everyone will suffer.

The solution to this is urbanisation. Give people flats in urban areas where they will have all amenities importantly good education and this localisation of talent pool will attract companies, this was the main reason for Chinese success. Unfortunately it is politically and bureaucratically better to give people 3 cents land in remote forest area and then 'develop' them.
