Mangaluru, Jan 19: “Six persons were arrested in connection to the assault of police constable Ganesh Kamath attached to Bunder police station on December 16 at Alake, New Chitra,” informed police commissioner N Shashi Kumar.
Addressing media here on Tuesday January 19, Shashi Kumar said, “The arrested are Aneesh Ashraf (22), Abdul Khader Fahad (23) and Raheel (18), all residents of Kudroli, Sheik Mohammed Harris (31) from Bajpe, Mohammed Qais (24) from Tannirbhavi, and Mohammed Nawaz (30) from BC Road.
“The gang is known as ‘Maya Gang’. Police constable Ganesh Kamath was a random target for the group as they wanted to avenge the anti-CAA protest firing which took place on December 19, 2019.
“Among the accused, Mohammed Nawaz works at a medical store. He was giving schedule H drugs to Mohammed Qaiz and was distributing to others as well. The market rate for the drug is Rs 60 per strip but it was sold at Rs 600. During the crime, the accused consumed scheduled H drugs.
“The accused coordinated with another gang as well in planning the assault. The probe is on to know the involvement of the other gang. We will arrest them soon. One of the accused, Aneesh Ashraf, who had criminal record in the past, contacted Raheel who agreed to execute the crime by consuming the schedule H drugs.
“Mohammed Nawaz also pretended to help the police by giving certain information and tried to mislead. The group were planning to execute the assault on December 19 on one year completion of the firing incident. The group was aware that security will be tightened on December 19 and hence executed the plan on December 16. The accused was also a distant relative of the victim of the firing incident,” he said.
Shashi Kumar further said, “Drugs like schedule H will not be sold without prescription. We will take action on the medical store as well. We have found that such drug is available at other medical stores as well. The doctors prescribe the drug for muscle related spasm, insomnia and old age problems.”
Regard a POCSO case under Ullal station limits, the police commissioner said, “We have filed two cases, one for sexual harassment and another for supporters threatening the victim. Two teams have been formed to trace the accused who is absconding. The mother and children live at Ullal and she is the lone breadwinner of the family. The accused sexually harassed the children the last time on December 25. He did it several times before that.”
DCPs Hariram and Vinay Goankar was present.
