Udupi, Jan 19: State animal husbandry minister, Prabhu Chauhan, met the head of Pejawar Math here, Sri Vishwaprasanna Teertha Swamiji, on Tuesday, January 19 morning, and held all-important consultation about the effective implementation of the anti cow slaughter act and steps which can be taken to extend protection to cows.
The minister announced that 6,000 veterinary officers in the state will be appointed soon.
The minister recalled the valuable contribution made to this field by the former head of Pejawar Math, the late Sri Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji, and the long-drawn action plan he had pursued towards implementing anti cow slaughter law. He also offered flowers to the photograph of the late Swamiji.
During the discussions, the Swamiji mentioned a plea he had submitted to the chief minister about giving pasture land on lease for the cow shelters and also about setting aside a part of the income of the temples and cooperative banks and societies towards the cow shelters. The minister promised to act on these requests forthwith.
Prabhu Chauhan said that two cow shelters will be built by the government in each of the taluks. In addition, support will also be extended to private cow shelters, he stated. The Swamiji, who appreciated the enactment of the cow slaughter prohibition Act by the state government, facilitated the minister.
Principal secretary of the department, Dr Suresh Gowda, was present. Krishna Bhat, Vasudeva Bhat, Vishnumurthy Acharya, Mahesh Kulkarni and students accorded a warm welcome to the minister on his arrival, on behalf of the Math.
