Mangaluru, Jan 16: In a gesture of humanity, a corporator from the city has come forward to help a family by providing electricity and water connection.
An elderly woman, Malathi, resides with her sister's son at Kallavu in Bolar. Unfortunately, the house did not have water and electricity connection due to their financial hardship and technical glitch.
Corporator Jagadish Shetty who came to know about the issue, made arrangements for electricity and water connection and got the house painted spending money from his own pocket. After works were completed, the house was handed over to the family on the auspicious occasion 'Makara Sankrathi' in the presence of Mangaluru south MLA D Vedavyasa Kamath, BJP Mangaluru south president Vijay Kumar Shetty and other BJP leaders and citizens in the vicinity.
During the distress of Covid-19 pandemic, Jagadish had also provided grocery kits from his own money to the residence of Malathi.
People in the vicinity have expressed their heartfelt thanks to the corporator for his noble gesture and for helping the needy during the time of distress.
On the occasion, MLA Kamath, lauding the gesture of Jagadish, said, “We should appreciate the initiative taken by corporator Jagadish. I sincerely request the public that if any houses in my constituency do not have electricity or water connection, it should be brought to the notice of party workers or corporators. We will make sincere efforts in providing the same.”
Speaking to daijiworld.com, Jagadish said, "Since my college days, I was inspired by the social activities of the NCC and NSS. Moreover, any social work that I do is not for the sake of publicity. As a social cause, I have donated blood 88 times. Even in my neighbourhood, I hold cleanliness campaigns.
"When I visited Malathi’s hosue for the first time, I saw the poor condition of the house and their sufferings. Hence, I decided to help her spending on my own. The happiness we get from helping the needy is impossible to explain. There are donors in the society but the needy cannot reach them through a proper channel. Whoever may be, people should come forward to help others and help the needy and poor. Helping the needy is the real devotion towards the God,” he said.
