Puttur, Jan 9: The dam at Nekkilady which supplies drinking water to the city has a lot of silt and sediment. The municipality expects that the city might suffer from water woes this summer because of the depleted water level due to this silt. It had written to the deputy commissioner of the district in the past to remove the sand that has accumulated at the bottom of the dam, but there has not been any positive response. Therefore, the municipality is preparing to undertake the clearance operation on its own.
Even though the water from the above dam has been continuously seeping out of the dam, the inflow into the dam has increased due to the untimely rainfall. Already 405 mld water has been stored there. Once the water level depletes, sand and silt accumulated by the side of the dam will be removed and gates will be fixed to the dam during the third week of January. Municipal president Jeevandhar Jain, said that therefore, the city will not face any water shortage till the end of May next year.
The dam at Nekkilady provides drinking water to Puttur Residents all 24 hours of the day. Currently, the dam with a capacity of 630 mld has filled and water is flowing out. As compared to this, during last January, water level had come down to the record low.
Puttur has a population of 60,000 and 9,200 water connections have been given. Municipal president Jeevandhar Jain, said that the municipality will undertake an operation to clear sand and silt in order to ensure that the city does not face water shortage.
