Mangaluru, Jan 4: Several parts of the coast received untimely rain coupled with strong wind and thunder on Sunday January 3 evening. The district experienced cloudy weather with intermittent sunshine during the day.
Places like Guthigar, Madappady, Sampaje, Aletty, Kadaba, Subrahmanya, Beltangady, Ujire, Dharmasthala, Puttur, Bantwal and other places received good rain for about an hor. Areas around Udupi and Manipal as well as some parts of Kasargod district too had some rain.
The farmers are worried as they fear that the areca nut inflorescence would be adversely affected and it will significantly reduce the yield. They also say that untimely rain might cause flowers of jackfruit, cashew, mango etc to wilt and fall as rain during the flowering season proves disastrous for them. Rain also will give rise to difficulty in properly drying the areca nut as even a little moisture affects the quality of areca nut.
Because of southeast wind, there is wide fluctuation in the temperature in the coast now. On Sunday, 34.9 degree Celsius maximum temperature was recorded while minimum was 21.4 degree. The meteorological department said that cloudy weather with cold conditions at night may continue in the district for two days with chances of some rainfall at a few places.
