Karnataka keeping tight vigil on UK returnees after Nov 25: Minister Sudhakar

Bengaluru, Dec 24 (IANS): Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister K. Sudhakar said on Wednesday that the health department is keeping a tight vigil on the passengers who returned from the United Kingdom to Bengaluru after November 25.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the members of the Karnataka Technical Advisory Committee (K-TAC) for Covid-19 at the Chief Minister's home office here, Sudhakar said that those who returned from the UK in the last one month will undergo 28 days' compulsory quarantine.

"Health officials will take care of their health for the initial 14 days. After that the individuals will have to voluntarily restrict themselves at their respective homes," he said.

According to the minister, as many as 2,500 passengers have arrived in the state during this period.

"We had two flights a day, one each by British Airways and Air India fly, so the passengers arriving during this period can be easily tracked. Details of the passengers are available and every single passenger will be kept under strict vigilance. RT-PCR test will be conducted if found symptomatic," he explained.

The minister maintained that the state government had identified four elite institutes in Bengaluru, including NCBS, IISc and NIMHANS, to study the genetic sequence of the virus.

"Samples of the positive persons will be given to one of these institutions for study to find out if anyone was carrying the new variant of the virus. It will help us study the genetic sequence of the new mutant strain," Sudhakar added that he held a detailed discussion with the members of K-TAC earlier on Wednesday morning and the meeting was significant on the backdrop of reports of a new strain of coronavirus found in the UK.

Responding to the objections raised by the bar and hotel owners' association over the night curfew, Sudhakar clarified that enforcing night curfew decision is never a 'happy decision' but it is 'inevitable' considering public health and safety.

"There are no restrictions on any activity before 11 pm and all agricultural activities including transportation and marketing of farm produce will not be affected," he said.

Our CM in Karnataka again felt Mike changing his mind .
Curfew starts from 24th Dec 2020 Thursday 11pm to 5am till Jan 2nd 2021. One more great example of "Sabka Vishwas" by stopping indian christians to celebrate the festival of jesus arrival to this world. Government new rule shows this is just for keeping a control over Christmas and New year celebrations. It has nothing to do with night or day, a virus will spread anytime and it doesn't have certain time! How will night curfew stop the viruses, it's clearly bias over certain sections of society. On Jan 2 the viruses will automatically disappear

I am not sure what this will achieve? Let's face it, the UK is not some rogue nation like Egypt, Malawi or Pakistan that is popular for all sorts of highly contagious diseases. On the contrary, the UK has a very liberal open-door immigration policy, which has benefitted both the UK and the rest of the world.
The science in the UK is so highly advanced that the majority of the medical innovations of 2020 have come from the UK (or the US). The reason, why the UK is first to find these new mutations, is because the UK has the technology to detect these minute changes in the genetic mapping of the virus.
It is a sad thing to say that India just copied rest of the world and banned flights from the UK instead of first randomly testing some of its own samples to see if such mutations are already rampant in India.
Please don't be surprised if there is no chief guest for this year's republic day parade in New Delhi. I doubt Boris will attend the function because British-Indians themselves are lobbying the government and persuading the PM to not to attend the function.
Also, when France was in deep trouble during the recent Muslim protests, India grabbed the moment by openly supporting Macron over his policies; this has brought India closer to France and France is now opposing every policy of EU that supports the rogue nation of pakistan. India could have done the same thing again by not copying the rest of the world, when the UK was at its lowest due to BREXIT. India missed a good opportunity to be a good ally of Britain.
