Mangaluru, Dec 19: Relating to the attack with sword on a head constable on duty near New Chitra Junction in the city on Wednesday, the police personnel have taken two persons into custody. They are being questioned.
Bunder station head constable, Ganesh Kamath, along with two other women constables, was checking vehicles near the New Chitra Junction here when the pillion rider of a scooter approached him, hit him once with a sword and escaped in the waiting scooter. A case in this respect was reregistered at Kadri police station.
The policemen are trying to ascertain the possible reason for this attack. The person who attacked the policeman was a little aged and the police are surprised at this incident. City police commissioner Vikash Kumar, said that all the recent developments are being closely monitored.
This attack has happened a few days before the first anniversary of Mangaluru disturbances. It may be recalled that graffiti had appeared at two places in the city recently in which a leaning towards terrorism was apparent. The police department has taken note of these incidents and has taken steps to strengthen law and order machinery at strategic places.
Now, patrolling has been intensified and in check points, in addition to lathis, the police are being equipped with arms to handle emergencies. In some places, in place of one or two policemen, four to five are being deployed.
