Mangalore, May 30: Two persons, who reportedly used to relieve the people of mobile phones, cash etc., by claiming themselves to be policemen, were nabbed by a team led by Bunder police inspector, Vinay M Gaonkar, on Friday May 28. Items worth Rs 60,000 were seized from them.
The arrested men have been identified as Nitesh (21), a resident of Church Gate in Kulshekar in the city, and Yatish (26) from Shivapadav near Kulshekhar. The policemen had received complaints that the two wielded sticks, intimidated people, and snatched away their belongings, in the guise of policemen.
In one such incident, the duo, riding a motor cycle, had approached Vincent D’Souza, who was then sitting near the Clock Tower on Lady Goschen Hospital Road here at around 12.15 am on Thursday May 28. They told him that they were policemen and asked him to show his belongings. The pillion rider then poked his hand into the pocket of Vincent, took away Rs 3,000 in cash along with a mobile phone found there, and instructed him to come to the Bunder police station the next day. The number plate of the motor bike had been masked with the help of clothes, but two pedestrians, who were passing by at that time, saw the incident, and identified Nitesh, one of the two accused.
Arrests were made on the basis of this identification.
