Kadaba, Dec 5: A drinking water unit that was meant to benefit the general public has been lying in a neglected state for the last two years in the town here. The work of the unit has not been completed.
The water unit was part of the ambitious scheme to supply clean drinking water to rural people. It was planned to supply 20 litres of drinking water to people who insert a two rupee coin. People here say that many such units installed elsewhere have failed.
Work on the unit had started two years back near the post office in the downtown here. A unit was built with metal sheet and a huge metal tank and a fibre tank were placed for purifying water next to it. The workers have not returned thereafter. Several things including the purification plant that costs a lot have been kept in the nearby scrap shop. Even though this unit costing about Rs 8 lac is lying unattended, the officials have not cared to do anything about it. This has angered the people.
When the unit was under construction, a protest led by zilla panchayat member P V Varghese, had been held. The workers had thereafter attended to the problem.
Chief officer of Kadana town panchayat, Arun K, says that the unit can be maintained only after the entire work is completed and handed over to the town panchayat. He said that work had started when Kadaba was a gram panchayat. Zilla panchayat member, P V Varghese, said that the company which undertook this work, had left the work unfinished and did not handover to the gram panchayat. He demanded that the unit should be completed immediately or it has to be shifted from its current position.
