Brazil's Covid-19 death toll tops 175,000

Brasilia, Dec 4 (IANS): Brazil reported 755 new coronavirus deaths in the past 24 hours, raising the total number of fatalities to 175,270, the second highest in the world after the US.

In a statement on Friday, the Ministry of Health said the country averaged 544 daily deaths in the past seven days, reports Xinhua news agency.

Also on Friday, the Ministry reported 50,434 new cases, increasing Brazil's total caseload to 6,487,084 since the onset of the pandemic in February.

The country accounts for the third highest coronavirus caseload, after the US and India.

Brazil's economy rebounded by 7.7 per cent in the third quarter compared with the second, the state-run Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics said earlier.

The rebound, driven primarily by state aid to businesses and underprivileged Brazilians but at a price of mounting deficit, will not prevent the GDP from ending 2020 with a 4.5-per cent contraction, according to financial market projections.
