Mangaluru, Nov 24: Bioluminescence activities were recorded at the banks of Someshwar and Uchila seashores. As the news of bioluminescence observed on the waves from Malpe to Karwar spread on social media, people gathered at Someshwar shore to witness it. The phenomenon has left many spectators astonished.
Bioluminescence activity was also observed at seashores of Ullal, Mukkacheri, Someshwar, Uchila and Talapady for the past several days. As the news of the light on Karwar seashore went viral on social media, people were filled with curiosity and visited Someshwar. People were found on the shore until late nights, capturing the activity on their mobile phones and cameras.
Talking about the reasons for the occurrence of the bioluminescence activities on the seashore, Shivakumar Haragi assistant professor, Karnataka University Zoology department, Karwar stated that the illumination of light takes place due to a single cell organism. When the organisms gather in large numbers at the seashore and due to the stress they undergo, they emit light, which is called bioluminescence activity. This is often seen on the coastline of Karnataka. Shivakumar also said that these activities were not a good sign and there might be some sort of connection between the mermaid and bioluminescence. Further, he stated that large quantities of these organisms and their effect on other lifecycles are something to be researched. One of the reasons, there has been an occurrence of the bioluminescence activities can be due to the developmental works taking place in the coastal line, which causes frequent growth of these organisms. During the day, the sea will be visible as green and at night in a dark blue colour, Shivakumar said.
In the past few days, the bioluminescence activity was also recorded along the seashore of Padukere, Malpe.
