Udupi, Nov 18: On the occasion of Deepavali, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje, presented some unique gifts to several women leaders at the centre including minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
Nirmala Sitharaman, Smriti Irani, Maneka Gandhi, Shefali Vaidya, Debashree, Meenakshi Lekhi, Vanathi, and DMK leader Kanimozhi, were some of the women who received gifts from Shobha. The MP had procured saris made at handlooms of Udupi and gifted them to the national level leaders and wished them on the occasion of Diwali. With this, she also made an effort to introduce the handlooms of Udupi to these leaders. Shefali expressed her glee at getting a beautiful sari on twitter.
"I have received a gift from BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje, on the occasion of Diwali. The sari made by handloom at Udupi is good. We need to notice that by this, she is making an effort to promote the local handloom and artefacts. Thanks to Shobha," she said. She also shared a photo of the sari.
In response, Karandlaje said that she is happy that the sari from Udupi was liked by Shefali. She said that she had seen that on Fridays, Udupi Lord Krishna used to be worshipped in the form of Goddess Laxmi by draping a sari around the idol and that Sri Ishapriya Theertha Swamiji has spoken about the proposal to revive this tradition. She said that her main aim is to extend support to skilled weavers. Shobha who sent the saris along with a letter on November 13, said that chose a local product in the form of gift in tune with the concept of 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat' promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and about the need to extend financial support to rural artisans.
