Mangaluru, Nov 10: Smart City project in Mangaluru is being executed. The decision to divert traffic to pave way for undertaking the Smart City project work has led to traffic chaos in the city and irked the public a lot as the diversions make it very inconvenient for the public to reach their destinations beyond Hampankatta.

A few weeks ago, for the purpose of Smart City project, the entry to Car Street was restricted. Now, reaching Hampankatta has been turned into an uphill task for the public due to the ongoing smart city work.

Two days ago, the road diversion order was issued, enforcing one-way traffic from Hampankatta to Navbharath circle. All traffic movement from Navbharath circle to Hampankatta has been banned during this period till January 2021.

All vehicles proceeding towards Light House Hill and Falnir from Hampankatta should take the longer route to PVS via KS Rao Road or Ambedkar circle. All vehicles approaching from Ambedkar circle towards Hampankatta should use Milagres cross road in front of Aravind Motors showroom at Balmatta Road and enter Falnir road. From there they have to go through Wenlock hospital underpass, railway station road, U P Mallya Road, adjacent to taluk panchayat office and proceed towards A B Shetty Circle.

All kinds of vehicle parking is prohibited on Milagres road. All vehicular movement from railway station via Wenlock hospital underpass towards Hampankatta junction will be banned.

Two-way traffic has been allowed from Ambedkar Circle to Light House Hill Road. These restrictions, however, do not apply to emergency service and police vehicles.

It is hard for the people to cope with such decisions spanning months in this situation. The roads in Mangaluru are so narrow and hence the traffic movement will slow down and lead to chaos in the entire city, leaving the people frustrated.

The current arrangement, imposed on them all of a sudden, has inconvenienced the people and the motorists in particular as it makes it very difficult for the people to reach their destinations. Hampankatta is at the centre of the city having several hospitals, colleges, religious places, shopping centres, government offices etc. During the festival time, it is usual for a lot of people to prefer to visit Hampankatta for shopping. The sudden order of diversion has sent the people's plans for a toss, and has frustrated them more and even the vehicles seemingly avoid entering Hampankatta as they face the risk of getting stuck in traffic.

People feel it is not the right time to divert traffic in places like Hampankatta and feel that the diversions were not planned in a scientific and systematic manner before decisions were taken.

Since the order of road diversion was issued, people are demanding for a chopper to enter Hampankatta by trolling the decision in the social media and netizens are taking the local MLA to task.

The people living in Car Street area are even more irked because of the closing of Hampankatta and also the work being undertaken at Car Street. This has made Car Street inaccessible and also people from the area find it very difficult to enter Hampankatta.

Car Street, Bunder and Hampankatta are located in the heart of the city, and entering this region, which the people are compelled to, has been made very difficult. The order was enforced on Sunday. When the people arrived for work on Monday, they were shocked to see that the roads of Hampankatta were dug and entry was restricted. This made it very hard for the people to reach their workplaces on time.

Mangaluru MLA Vedavyasa Kamath, conducted a meeting on Monday with the officials of Smart City project, police officials, Mangaluru City Corporation officials, bus owners associations etc and urged the officials not to take such drastic measures which heap miseries on the general public in the name of Smart City development work.

Our leaders applied their country ideas to make Mangalore a smart city. Now first time earthquake has come in our city and it will take another 10 years to complete. I bet with in one year they change the plan and start to dig the roads again. Contact should have been given to some reputed national level contractors.

Firstly our service bus stand should have been shifted to Pumpwell. If this was done there would not have been traffic jam like this. Without completing the shifting of bus stand to Pumpwell no works in our City should be done in connection with Smart City Project. It has become a mess now.

BJP's area of expertise is religious politics and useless protests and it's evident that they lack foresight and vision on the economic and development front.

This is the result of blindly voting for BJP in D.K & Mangalore for 30 years.

What SMART are they doing other than digging the roads and concretising them!

Instead they should have built a new city in the outskirts properly planned like Navi Mumbai, CBD Belapur, Panvel etc!

Mangalore is expanding and developing but there is hardly any place to make wider roads due to generation old ill planned shopping buildings and bad roads network.

This is a total failure by the MCC. Without planning and experimenting about the traffic. The MCC and traffic police should have tried with the diversion before the works start. Only if the diversion of traffic is successful then the actual works could start and then all stakeholders would be happy. What happened to the smart city officials? tomorrow if schools start just imagine the state of affairs at Milagres cross road. Auto drivers making good money.
There are no buses plying from State bank towards Falnir, Kankannady.
    Total mess and mismanagement.

Based on my experience, Mangalore or any place in India we ignore proper planning. When the project is awarded, Contractors just #khalli #walli nature, start digging. Smart city need smart ideas, smart techniques, smart procedures and a smart execution.
Secondly, people should change the mindset of using Roads, need proper sign boards and road marking (first of all need proper road and infrastructure), follow the instruction and the rules, Stop jaywalking, stop cutting the highways in the middle of the divider to cross the other side of the road (I have seen this in Kolya, Ullala, Kotekar (everywhere same situation).
For example In UAE or any other country (I mean which has roads like UAE), Road and infrastructure is huge thing, with a proper planning. And also people follow rules.
If it’s one way, don’t go in that road in opposite direction, stop doing that. If it’s getting late, plan your journey accordingly.

Only few years back car street was dug up and widened. Now again it is dug up for putting a not so wide pipe in the centre of the road,at that time the MLA was of BJP and corporator of Congress. Now again the MLA is of BJP. Pipes could have easily be laid below the footpath one side at a time. The people having business on that road have suffered losses due to lockdown again when the business was picking up due to festivals, they suffered again. Majority of the shops owners are from the same community as the MLAs and the corporator mentioned earlier Surprisingly there are no protests.

Does it make sense to do road repairs during the year end ,Christmas and new year time . This is the time when the whole of mangalore is shopping and going out.
Businessmen have been badly hit and just woken up from corona and were looking up for some business this season. This hope also has been dashed.

What a sick mentality of the people in power not even thinking and just declared another lockdown.

BJP knows nothing about good planning. They have suddendly closed multiple main roads at the heart of the city. This is painfully frustrating. Just like demonetization blunder, they repeatedly do such unplanned poorly executed works. Thokkottu flyover is another unscientifically engineered work, which killed a couple recently and causes several accidents repeatedly.
