Parents' consent for students mandatory to attend college in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Nov 10 (IANS): Karnataka mandates that college students who wish to attend the classes physically must bring in the consent letter duly signed by their parents.

Though, Karnataka is reopening colleges from November 17 onwards, the state would continue to have on-line mode of teaching as well and it will be entirely students' choice to opt physical attendance or on-line classes, the note from the higher education department stated.

The Higher Education department has formulated the standardized operating procedure (SOPs) as per the University of Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, in order to reopen degree, engineering, and diploma colleges in the state from November 17 onwards.

Deputy Chief Minister C. N. Ashwatha Narayana said apart from these the SOPs, the colleges will also have to follow guidelines like cleansing of buildings, entrance, furniture, teaching materials by sanitizers. "Covid-19 test for teaching faculty, students, and non-teaching staff is mandatory," he said.

He added that while conducting the physical classes social distance needs to be maintained by taking into account the total number of students and the available total number of classrooms as per the guidelines of the health department and the present advisories.

"Teaching, practical and project classes should be conducted in a staggered manner if it is necessary," he said.

He added that the teaching faculty will prepare the study materials required for the duration of one month based on each period/session and compulsorily send it to concerned students via Telegram/ WhatsApp/E-mail.

"These study materials can be in the form of Video Lectures, PowerPoint Presentations, E-Notes, E-Books, Audio Books, Practice Questions, etc. It is also mandatory to upload the same study materials to the website of the college," he explained.

"Deputy Chief Minister C. N. This they have to do everyday. Recent news I got one of the colleges in city asked their students to attend the college compulsorily..with 100% capacity. Govt. Is giving guidelines and these colleges leave it in the air. Why they have collected fees in the month of May? Many parents do not want to risk the lives of their children as many are having only one kid in their family... These colleges want to increase the infection as happened in Andhra Pradesh?? ...

Good decision with bad planning ruins the very purpose of education .
If Sweeden's example is taken which proved youngsters never got infected or passed it on to their parents or teachers.
No compulsory testing should be imposed on either students or teachers as the test kit itself states that it is meant only for experimental purpose and not to test for covid.
If one step forward and 2 steps backwards will do more harm than good with the hoax of pandemic.

Very good step by the government... Much appreciated. Now, if any untoward incident happens or if anyone gets infected, college is not responsible at all. Because of the consent of parents, students are going not by the force from the government or college. Please make this rule compulsory don't change which is safe from the point of view of all the students. Just yesterday saw, some students were seeng grouping and chitchatting, in a public place in the evening hours , much later than the school left....This is the way, how these children go home and give infection to the elderly at home... This is wise decision

For some reason , my college is doing the complete opposite. They are asking us for a letter stating the reason why 'they won't be able to attend offline classes'.
