Karnataka rethinks, may reopen schools in week's time

Bengaluru, Nov 3 (IANS): Karnataka's plan to reopen schools hit a roadblock as the scheduled meeting of the concerned officials could not be held on Monday and has been rescheduled for November 4.

After the Andhra Pradesh government took a decision to reopen schools two days ago, the Karnataka government too felt the need to deliberate on this model for three days with officials concerned before announcing its final decision. As a result of this, the meeting was convened but due to technical glitches, the meeting had to be called off abruptly.

Minister S Suresh Kumar

Speaking to reporters here, Primary and Secondary Education Minister S. Suresh Kumar said, "We are seriously studying the Andhra Pradesh model for reopening of schools. Prior to taking any decision, we need to examine everything as it is a question of students' lives."

He added that the state too has agreed to reopen colleges from November 17 and in the meanwhile, the state is also witnessing a trend of Covid positive cases coming down considerably.

"Hence we are also giving it a fresh thought to reopen schools," he said and added that even experts have suggested that it would be better if schools are reopened in a phased manner.

The minister said that not every student can afford online education.

"Prior to reopening, we need to gather information on various fronts besides the health condition of the teachers and students," he said.

"Experts feel that prolonged closure of schools can have negative impact on child's mind as well; therefore, we are examining all these things before arriving at a final decision," Kumar said.

COVID 19 cases are coming down for one of the reason that schools were closed. If schools are opened again surely cases will shoot up again and spread rapidly. Instead of aping Andra the minister should have a close look at what is happening in Europe and other countries. Having unqualified ministers has destroyed the education system and the country as well.

Singapore has contained the disease. That govt is very strict...we have sanitizing truck but dont know where they are doing it...such a waste of money. Municipal corporation doesn't spray foe mosquitoes little interior areas but regularly does in hifi areas where rich people stay ......if they spray other area, some comment its not good for the health it seems. Why health of rich people doesn't affect by the spray? They didnt conceive? They dont have healthy children,? Interior people without spraying have no health issues...bakwas excuses

Dear minister, why are you imitating Andhra? Look at our immediate neighbour Kerala...We have so many students coming from there. Oh... This is the reason, circus is shown in media that recoveries outnumber, virus decreased, suddenly deaths are less etc... Just few days before Bangalore was showing higest infections.... What a drastic change all of a sudden !!!! Dear sir, people those who are sick don't visit the hospitals and getting treated at home by following precautions as well as by taking tablets which give immunity... Why they don't go you know sir, because of the fear of huge bills on blood tests, ppe kits (for all the employees of the staff) and fear of huge bill at the time of discharge if they admit out of discomfort..... Please wake up dear minister.... Never play with the lives of children even if they are small or college going.... They are the future of country, and not your accumulated money... Let it go online till vaccine comes and works successfully ..

These people have no clarity of thought. Decision should be based on ground reality and with the welfare of citizens should be the prime concern.

On the contrary, the clandestine way of announcing reopening date of schools and then altering it frequently only suggests that the notorious lobbies are working behind the screen.

Please don't give in to the pressure exerted by the so called "educationists". Children are precious to each family. We don't want to risk their lives for the sake of making someone rich.

This entire year is anyways lost, what good is 3-4 months of school going to do?? Most of the countries are in the second phase of lock down with more worse things happening. Only here, most people think we won corona and it's gone. The next wave us going to be worse cos the virus too would adapt itself and come back stronger. This is not all the time to take such unwarranted risks, stay at home and promote kids this year.

This is preposterous.... the blind following the blind. Prior to,opening of educational institutions, specially the primary sections, the Government needs to involve all stake holders, specially The parents and teachers. Just because there is a drop in cases by single digits, doesn’t mean the corona virus is receding. The government has failed in handling the pandemic due to flawed policies, opening of schools and The resultant crowds / traffic will only exacerbate the situation. Children are vulnerable, it is impossible to ask them not to intermingle / touch each other, besides most schools have deplorable toilets , no soap, no water, please Minister don’t think of political motives - think with a level head after consulting experts.
