Mangalore, May 1: In connection with chasing and bludgeoning to death a petty thief named John Pinto (43), a resident of Mannagudda in the city, by a gang early morning on Thursday April 29, the policemen of Barke station have arrested eight persons. They have been accused of murdering Pinto. Reportedly, the men were agitated over petty thefts taking place in the area that had bothered some of them. The arrests were made on Friday.
The arrested have been identified as Barke Charan, Tokkottu Vicky alias Vikram, Rajesh, Avinash, Sushant, Mahendra, Deekshit and Shreyas. A police team led by sub-inspector Shivaprakash made these arrests.
It is said that the men had formed groups to find out the thief responsible for thefts of some of their belongings. After finding John Pinto lurking in darkness for theft, they reportedly chased him and hit him with wooden pieces and sticks, injuring him badly. He was then abandoned on a road in Mannagudda by the gang. After some people, who found Pinto lying by the roadside, informed the Barke police, he was moved to a hospital, where he died shortly thereafter. Before dying, he had given hints about his killers.
All the arrested men are aged between 22 and 24 years, and work as electricians, labourers, welding worker etc., it is learnt.
