Karnataka government likely to ban tobacco products in a week

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SD)

Bengaluru, Oct 9: Stricter measures are expected within a week by the Karnataka government with regard to chewing of tobacco products including gutka.

A meeting was held in July by the governor Vajubhai Vala along with chief minister B S Yediyurappa and home minister Basavaraj Bommai and discussed the possibility of ban on the sale and distribution of chewing tobacco products.

On Thursday two officials met the governor - additional chief secretary to the chief minister E V Ramana Reddy and additional chief secretary of health and family welfare department Jawaid Akhtar.

A press release was issued from the Raj Bhawan that stated that a progressive report will be submitted to the chief minister by the two officials on banning gutka as well as scented and non-scented chewing tobacco.

The officials said that an ordinance on the matter would be issued within a week.

Govt will never ban Liquor, cigarettes, etc because they are revenue generating items maufactured by multi national companies and consumed by the rich. These chewing tobacco products are mostly used by poor class, maufactured by small local companies and sold at road side shops.
It is very easy to penalise the poor anytime but very hard to go agsinst the rich and mighty!

The great job Karnataka government is doing . By this we may keep our city clean and neat. Presently we see Gurkha packets are spreading all around; and even we may not not see any colours over Government buildings and bus stands.

    Please ban immediately.

Sir, Supari is used for making many other products apart from using it for Pan or Tabaco related and many farmers depend on this for their livelihood
