Mangaluru: Violators beware - Mask-related fines go up steeply

Mangaluru, Oct 5: The district administration has decided to implement the government orders pertaining to coronavirus control strictly. From Monday October 5, people who are caught without masks in public places will have to cough up heavy fines.

Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, Dr K V Rajendra, said that official instructions have already been issued to the officials on behalf of the district administration.

As per the state government instructions, people not wearing masks within the limits of the city corporations will be fined Rs 1,000 while the fine amount is Rs 500 in all other places. The fine levied so far was Rs 200. City corporation commissioner, Akshy Shridhar, said that the increased fine would be levied within the corporation limits from Monday.

Additional deputy commissioner of Udupi district, Sadashiva Prabhu, said that revised fine has come into effect in the district and from Sunday itself, fine of Rs 500 was imposed for not wearing of masks.

The government has hiked the fine, in view of the fact that the people have been lethargic in following the rules in spite of repeated corona awareness drives undertaken by it. The increase in fine is expected to achieve that purpose.

    Increasing fine wont decrease corona,but mask is important for the sake of safety, usage of mask depending upon the circumstances - if you are bike rider, driving car with family member , if you are alone in remote ares then there is no need., Using force to collect fine from poor people is unacceptable , authority may miss use the govt machinery - collection of fine is gain of commission and another way marshalls may skip influence people ( can they stop politicians and their goons)

    The problem is that several "peoples representatives" do not wear mask. The Corporator of our ward does not wear a mask...and here our Corporation is trying to impress upon the people to wear a mask.

    Here's the thing...whether you believe in its effectiveness or not...it does not matter, the rule is to wear a mask in public places and so you wear it ...especially need to wear in public transport vehicles, shops n other enclosed public spaces like malls, offices, buildings and clubs, market, etc. It's not an option, if one wants to be in that public space then he/she wears a mask and observes social distancing. And wear the mask properly covering the nose and mouth fully...not to wear as a chin guard!!!

    Several delivery personnel are now not wearing mask or wearing it properly. They may choose not wear while on the move in their vehicle, but they need to wear when handling the items they deliver.

    This is mainly because some wrong information is getting circulated saying there won't be enough oxygen to breathe if masks are worn which is wrong. May be little suffocation some feel as its new to us... but mask wearers get oxygen for sure.... Wearing masks should have been made compulsory and should've started imposing fine right from the lock down day first.... And Side by side proper awareness should have been given..... Now, mostly everyone has taken it lightly which will be very bad in coming days... Now, hearing the news of corona infected people from some neighbourhoods as well as from the known people who were initially taking care but now recently neglected masks and started moving out.... Anti maskers often say that masks cut off oxygen supply to the brain and it leads to problems... Hahahahaha when you go to get any surgery done, the surgeon always wears a mask. So all surgeons suffer brain damage? During funeral and social functions people forgot guidelines and attend in large numbers... 20/50....????

    The district administration is going on the right path by increasing fines for those not wearing mask. Covid-19 cases are increasing day by day. People should understand by now it is for the good of themselves and for everybody.

    Right implementation for the sake of protecting self and also controlling the spread of deadly virus.
    Also, face masks should be used for a limited or certain period only and not for weeks. Government
    must provide face masks to general public on a subsidized rate to reduce the burden on common man.

    There are no indications, that Covid19 pandemic is subsiding, rather infections are rising at an alarmingly rate, especially in densely populated regions in India !!!! Lock down is not practical nor feasible, due to the extensive financial crisis. The crumbling health sectors is a serious malady, citizens should take utmost precautions, as the nation, has been thrown open, to facilitate normal life... Those who refuse to wear mask and maintain a reasonable social distancing, will fall prey to this pandemic !!!!

    Our soldiers wear uniform and other equipment weighing around 10 kgs.
    Can we not wear a small mask to protect ourselves and our fellowmen ?
    Like doctors, nurses and all others who protect us by working around the clock,
    Let us at least protect others by wearing a simple mask. Be a carona soldier.

    Increase the fine amount further.
    If the person is not able to pay on the spot, confiscate adhaar card, DL or atleast his mobile phone. Let them pay and collect those from corporation office.

    but please make sure, a free mask is given on every fine imposed!
